As of 1 October, New Zealand is the first country in the world to make mulesing illegal. A new code of animal welfare published by the Ministry of Primary Industries included outlawing the practice for the first time. Mulesing has always been banned as part of PGG Wrightson’s Wool Integrity programme. As well as being ethically sound from an animal welfare perspective, prohibiting mulesing by law gives the New Zealand wool industry an excellent competitive position when marketing our product to international brands and consumers.
